The Renaissance architecture was the “new birth of learning” that arrived in Europe some five hundred years ago. The Renaissance does not bring new ideas into architecture. However, it encourages the study of the classical styles of Greece and Rome, which improves the architectural design of modern architecture. Up to fifty or seventy-five years ago, the only developments in architecture for hundreds of years had been designing. About two hundred years ago, Robert Adam designed the simple single-walled residence he built in London, England. Cities in Europe and America then copied that architectural design. At the same time, the American “colonial house” was built not only in all of New England, but throughout the country, and in the “Southern House” with its high pillars or wooden columns.

Foundation of The Renaissance Architecture

Almost all the houses were the same in the construction, with a strong foundation wall made of stone or bricks, beams (often trunks of large trees) laid on these walls and the house built on them. Space has been found by building, always two or three stories and often four or five stories. The large public buildings have been decorated with great style, in styles called baroque and rococo. The houses were full of frills and ornaments everywhere, as well as small bell towers and domes where the architect could find his place. We call these decorations “gingerbread” now, and I do not find them very pretty.

Modern age

The true modern age of architecture began around seventy-five years ago. Two things made it possible: the strength of steel reinforced concrete, with which gigantic skyscrapers could be built; and the elevator, which allowed the use of the skyscraper. With these developments, the architects started building tall skyscrapers, office buildings and condominiums and hotels. These structures were still influenced by old design ideas. The Woolworth building, completed in 1913, is quite sophisticated. The tall buildings of the Rockefeller Center, in comparison, are very simple.
